Translating & Interpreting Service (TIS)

The Translating & Interpreting Service (TIS) is available for people who do not speak English and for English speakers needing to communicate with them. TIS has services in over 75 different languages and dialects and is accessible from anywhere in Australia for the cost of a local call. Residents are encouraged to use this service to ensure that their needs are fully understood and met.
This service is also available at the front counter of council's Administration Centre, 4-20 Eton Street, Sutherland. Council will contact the relevant interpreter by telephone and coordinate a three way conversation, where a Council Customer Service Officer will be able to provide assistance through the interpreter on the telephone and face to face with the customer.
Alternatively, you can contact the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 13 14 50 and ask them to contact Council on (02) 9710 0333 on your behalf. The interpreter service will coordinate a three-way telephone conversation, where a Council Customer Service Officer will be able to provide assistance through the interpreter.
Language Aide Officers

Sutherland Shire Council also has accredited Language Aide Officers to assist you. These officers are available during working hours to provide basic assistance with communication in a community language and English between a Council staff member and resident during either a face-to-face or telephone inquiry, regarding simple and general Council matters.
Council currently has Language Aides available to assist you in the following languages:
The University of NSW Institute of Languages have tested (orally) these Language Aides. They are Language Aides not interpreters but will be able to assist you with your enquiries. This service is available at the front counter of council's Administration Centre, 4-20 Eton Street, Sutherland. If the Language Aide is unavailable your details are taken and the Language Aide will contact you to arrange a suitable time. All enquiries should be made to the Administration Centre.
